                                      Sweet Rosemary

It was 1957 and I was seven years old...Clarksfork, Idaho. It was a hot summer day and I'd walked to the grocery store with my mother. I suddenly forgot the heat and stood in "wonder" as I gazed at the most beautiful doll I'd ever laid eyes on! OHHHH how I wanted her, but I was certain that she must cost a million bucks so I didn't even ask! My mother took my hand and I walked reluctantly away dreaming of this beautiful doll...

As you'll see when you visit my site...I love all dolls from the 1950's - to about 1965. That's when I traded in my dolls for boys...tee hee. I still have the Tiny Tears Doll that I received for Christmas in 1956...her head is cracked and silver soldered together; her body is a lot darker than her face and I accidentally bit off her pinky finger when I was about 8 or 9...I felt soooooo guilty. I still have my Sweet Rosemary that I received for Christmas in 1957 (see my story...The Angel's Magic). I also have my Tammy doll that I received in 1964...it was the year of Tammy and the Beatles...WOW...what teenage girl could ask for more.
Now that I'm a grandmother...I'm playing with dolls again and enjoying every minute of it. I hope you enjoy visiting my doll site and please feel free to email me and I'll do my best to answer your questions.

Sweet Rosemary has beautiful blonde hair and deep blue eyes. WOW! She came with "jewels"! Her earrings, necklace and hair pin were made of imitation pearls and "Oh my gosh!"...they all matched. Her lips and fingernails are perfectly painted and her complexion is peaches and cream.
She has a one piece body that was made of something new...it was called "miracle skin". This skin was an attempt to imitate human skin. Her head is a medium soft vinyl and her hair is saran.

In my opinion, she's the most beautiful of the 1950's fashion dolls. Even in today's doll market, it would be difficult to find a doll to rival her beauty.

Sweet Rosemary and her sister dolls: Cinderella, Beautiful Gail, Darling Debbie and Betty the Beautiful Bride are known as grocery store dolls. They were sold at grocery stores and/or given away as premiums for purchases during 1957. These dolls were the "average" girls imitation of the more expensive Revlon type dolls. Amazingly they have endured for nearly 50 years and are becoming more collectible with time and rarity.

She carries a darling plastic purse with an embossed design in the plastic...it hangs from a little golden chain. The little purse has a plastic peg snap closure. I've found that it's best not to open these purses if you're lucky enough to get one with the peg snap still working. In some cases the plastic may have become brittle with age and opening and closing it may cause it to break.

Sweet Rosemary's dress is made of beautiful pink taffeta satin and the satin is then covered in bountiful layers or tiers of delicate pink lace that has a tiny silver thread woven through it. This lace especially manufactured for these dresses is one of the most beautiful laces that I've ever seen. Her fingerless gloves or gauntlets are made of the same pink and silver lace as the dress. The soft light pink of the dress is accented with a dark pink velvet cumberbun that accentuates her tiny waistline. She's wearing high heel shoes with a silver adornment. This doll is truly a dazzler even after almost fifty years. If you're interested in a Sweet Rosemary or any of her sister dolls just visit my shop at Ruby Lane: Baby Boomer Dolls (link at the bottom of the page).

In my opinion, she's the most beautiful of the 1950's fashion dolls. Even in today's doll market, it would be "very" difficult to find a doll who could rival her beauty!
